SAFETY FIRST! Working on carpentry seems more difficult than it really is. The most important thing to remember is to "measure accurately twice and cut once".
  • Remember to respect all power tools. If used inappropriately, accidents can occur.

  • When repairing balusters, be sure to carefully inspect style of baluster and double check the length before cutting.

Home Improvement Instructions For Baluster Replacement

  1. Missing balusters on railings is a dangerous condition. Simply match the baluster in need at your home improvement store or local stair and rail company.

  2. Measure the height of the railing between bottom of top rail and top of floor.

  3. Purchase a matching baluster (usually style #5015) two inches longer than that measurement. Balusters usually come 31", 34", 36" and 41" long. A level rail will generally require a 36" long baluster unless the railing needing attention is a balcony rail which will then probably need a 41".

  4. After determining the correct length of baluster and the correct style, remeasure the required length one more time. Cut the length of the replacement baluster 1-1/2" longer. Cut off all but 1/4" of the pin located on the bottom of the baluster.

  5. Slip the top of the baluster into the hole in the top rail. Push the baluster upward so that the bottom will slide into the hole in the bottom cap. Gently tug the baluster downward. Twist it slightly to line up with other balusters.

  6. Using a drill and a very small wood bit, drill a hole horizontally through the bottom of the top rail into the top portion of the new baluster. Also drill two small holes in the bottom block at an angle into the bottom cap.

  7. Carefully nail in all three nails through the baluster into the rail and cap.

  8. You now have completed fixing up your rail!
