Circular Saw

A circular saw, also known as a framing saw, is one of the power woodworking tools found in most workshops.

A circular saw has been used for years by building contractors and carpenters.

They are portable and powerful. These saws can rip, crosscut as well as cut non-wood products.

IMPORTANT!
When working with any power tool you must respect it.
  • Always allow the blade to come to a complete stop before setting the saw down.
  • Be aware that a board being cut can become pinched at any time and jerk the saw hard.
  • Keep fingers away from the blade.
  • Be sure the blade guard moves freely.

Features

  • Size - These saws come in different sizes based on diameter of the saw blade. The sizes range from 4" to 10".
  • Horsepower - When buying a circular saw, buy one that has higher horse power than other models the same size. A 1 HP will work, but models with 2 HP or more are less likely to bind.
  • Blade Adjustment - Typically you will want a saw that will adjust the depth of the blade as well as offers a bevel adjustment. These adjustments need to be easy to adjust and firmly tighten.
  • A convenient handle with safety trigger to control start up.
  • ALWAYS unplug the saw when changing or adjusting the blade.

Safety Features

  • Safety switch - This is a switch that must be held before the trigger can be depressed.
  • Blade guard - This moves easily when pushing the saw through wood and then springs back.

Optional Features

  • Anti-lock clutch - This allows the blade to slip if the blade binds which will protect the motor and drive mechanism.
  • Blade lock - This locks the drive spindle in place making it easier to change the blade.
  • AC Powered - Must be plugged in with cord.
  • Battery Powered - Runs on batteries making it more versatile but usually has less horsepower than the AC powered saws.
