SAFETY FIRST! Working on carpentry seems more difficult than it really is. The most important thing to remember is to "measure accurately twice and cut once".
  • Remember to respect all power tools. If used inappropriately, accidents can occur.

  • Check with local building department for codes that will apply to your situation. This will include how high to place the new wall rail.

Instructions to Install Handrail

  1. All stairs need hand (or sometimes called wall) rail to grasp in case you loose your balance.

  2. First measure the length of your stairs. This will usually be about 13 feet long.

  3. Purchase one piece of wall rail.

  4. Cut the length of the purchased rail at least as long as the stair is. You need to be able to grasp the rail all the way along the stair.

  5. Check local codes for proper rail height. Rail height is always measured from the front of each tread and perpendicular to the tread. In other words, measure straight up from the front of the tread. Typical rail heights will be 32" up to 40".

  6. Using the framing square, make sure your marks for rail height are vertical off of each tread.

  7. Mark the spot in the bottom hole of the handrail bracket on the wall about 3" below the required rail height.

  8. Align bracket over this mark and mark the two additional holes in each bracket.

  9. All brackets should be anchored over studs in the wall and not just into the drywall for proper strength.

  10. Screw in screws into all brackets. Brackets should be about 6 feet apart maximum. 4 feet on center will usually result in helping to find the studs after the first one has been located.

  11. Attach the wall rail onto each bracket using the screws provided with the brackets. Generally a pilot hole will be needed for each screw to keep the rail from splitting.

  12. If desired, return each end of the wall rail into the drywall. This is not necessary, but looks nice.

  13. Grasp handrail and test for secure anchoring both to the wall and to the bracket.

  14. You have just made your stair safer for all who use it! You now know how to install rail.
