Instructions For Replacing a Broken Patio Door Handle
- You must first determine which style of handle you need to replace. One is a Mortised Handle and one is a simpler
Non-Mortised handle.
A mortised handle has a rectangular shaped lock mechanism approximately 1/2" thick by 3" tall that inserts through a rectangular hole on the edge of the sliding panel.
A non-mortise style handle does not penetrate the edge of the sliding panel. This style basically just screws onto the interior and exterior sides of the moving panel, but does still allow the
door to lock. .
- Frequently you will discover it is a mortised handle. For Non-Mortised patio handle replacement instructions click here.
If this is the case, then unscrew the two
phillips head screws located on the inside of the handle.
You may notice two additional screws on the mortise or edge of the
patio door.
These do NOT need to be removed under normal circumstances. If you have already purchased a
mortise style handle then you already know that the mortise assembly
does NOT come with the replacement handle.
- If you haven't already purchased your replacement handle, you need to visit your favorite home improvement
store and buy one now. The price should be about $22 give or take a couple of bucks.
- Unpack and inspect all of the parts just purchased. (See picture above)
Attach the wooden handle to the metal handle by
screwing in the two screws. Make sure they are tight as you will not be able to tighten these once the new handle is
totally installed. At least not easily.
- Align the inside and the outside handle parts to the holes in the door and screw the two phillips head screws
through those holes and evenly tighten each screw.
- At this point you may want to adjust the mortise assembly receiver located on the jamb of the patio door.
Proper adjustment will allow your new handle to lock when desired.
You have now completed the installation of a new patio door handle which should operate without fail for
about 10 years or even longer.
