recessed light SAFETY FIRST! Working with electricity scares a lot of people. When installing a light, you need to follow these electrical safety tips.
  • Always make sure the power is SHUT OFF by turning off the breaker in the circuit breaker box or by removing a fuse in a fusebox. Note: fuseboxes are not as common as circuit breaker boxes.
  • Test the circuit or light in question and make sure it does not turn on and light up.

Home Improvement Instructions for Adding a Rehab Type of Recessed Light

If you want to install a regular recessed (Can) light, go back a page and click on Recessed Light. If you want to install a Rehab recessed light, then proceed here.

  1. Decide where in the ceiling or soffit you want your new recessed light to be. If you need more than one, just repeat the instructions below for each light.

  2. recessed light trim
    Typical Trim.

  3. ALWAYS THINK ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE TRIM before installing your light housing. You MUST leave enough room around the light for the trim to actually fit in before the extra width of some trims hits (for instance) a cabinet or wall or other item.

  4. Another design criteria is to place lights centered on double door cabinets (if working in the kitchen). If done properly, this will have a nice "balanced look" after trim out.

  5. Check the instructions that came with your particular light. You will need to cut a nice round hole the size recommended in your instructions in the drywall. This will be your "gateway" in which you will install your new rehab recessed light.

  6. Decide how best to "fish" a new wire to this hole.

  7. Do not place your light housing into the hole yet. You will need to hook the wire to it first.

  8. box connector
  9. Next you'll need to run your wire (usually Romex) through a box connector anchored in the knockout hole of the light junction box. Strip the 3 wires (including ground wire) and wire each to the appropriate colored wire, you know, black to black and so on. Twist these together using a yellow scotchlock. Attach the ground wire to the green screw within the junction box.

  10. The junction box has a little rectangular cover that definitely must be placed back on the junction box. It will click when properly anchored.

  11. Follow the same procedure if installing additional rehab recessed lights.

  12. Install your trim as per the instructions.

  13. Depending on your choice of trims, install a light bulb (or possibly a Flood bulb) into the recessed light.

  14. Turn the power back on, flip the switch and enjoy your new light.
