Replace Garbage Disposal

garbage disposal SAFETY FIRST! Working with plumbing scares a lot of people. When installing a garbage disposal, you need to follow this plumbing safety tip.
  • Before performing the task of replacing a garbage disposal, make sure the electricity is shut off.

Supplies for Replacing a Garbage Disposal

These pictures show the basic items you'll need to replace garbage disposal.

Instructions for Replacing A Garbage Disposal

  1. Once the electricity is shut off, unscrew one screw and disconnect one black and one white wire from the source. Pull the two wires out of the old disposal.

  2. The next step is to remove the drain pipe and dishwasher drain pipe from the old unit. Be sure and place plastic bucket of some sort under the drain pipe as it will spill water. Save this pipe and all fittings for re hook up.

  3. Twist the old garbage disposal Clockwise about 3" and the unit will drop down.

  5. If your sink disposal drain basket is in good shape, you don't have to replace it with a new one. But, if in doubt, remove the old one and the old plumbers putty. Be sure and clean the sink with rubbing alchohol.

  6. Remove the mounting bracket from the new disposal. It is shipped attached to the new unit.

  8. There are 3 screws used to attach this bracket to the basket above. Back out the 3 screws for easier installation.

  10. The next step is to make sure the new basket is anchored tightly to the sink and plumbers putty was used.

  11. If you are connecting a dishwasher to this disposal, remove the knockout plug in the one inch line inside the garbage disposal.

  12. Grasp the new disposal and lift it up to the under side of the sink. Align the bracket on top of the garbage disposal and twist clockwise about 2 - 3". Unit is now hanging properly.

  13. Attach the dishwasher drain hose to the one inch inlet on the disposal using an adjustable clamp.

  14. Thread the electrical wires into the new unit. Hook up black to black and white to white. If there is no switch to control the garbage disposal, then one will have to be added.

  15. Re-attach the drain pipe to new unit.

  16. You have just replaced your garbage disposal!
