1. Once the water supply is shut off, open (if possible) the hose bib to be replaced. This will allow water to drain out.


2. The next step is to remove the two screws holding the hose bib to the wall.


3. Locate the supply line feeding the hose bib, usually this will be found in the basement ceiling.


4. Using a copper pipe cutter (or a hacksaw if no pipe cutter), cut just beyond the adapter. This is the point where the hosebib is screwed to the end of the copper pipe.


5. Remove the old the hose bib by pulling it through from the outside.


6. Allow any trapped water to completely drain out at this point. It may help to gently pull the the copper pipe downward. Any water left in this pipe anywhere near this point will not allow soldering to properly adhere.


7. The next step is to attach the male adaptor copper fitting to the new hose bib. You will need to apply pipe dope (available in a tube or a container) to the threads of the copper adaptor. Carefully start twisting this piece into the the hose bib. This adaptor must be completely screwed in and tightened with a wrench to avoid any leaks at this point.


8. Install the new hose bib through the hole where the old one was.


9. Go back to the basement interior and see how much room there is between adaptor (which is already attached to the new hose bib) and where you cut the copper pipe originally. Measure carefully. Cut a new piece of copper pipe. Remove the new hose bib and solder this pipe to the adaptor. Doing this outside is easier than attempting to solder overhead inside. Solder a copper coupling to this pipe then insert into the original hole.


10. If you have measured correctly, the open end of the coupling will bump up against the end of the supply pipe. Guide the pipe into the coupling and solder.


11. Gently turn the water back on and watch each soldered joint for a short while to see if any leaks develop.


12. If any leaks occur, then you must resolder and try again. Leaks are generally caused because the surface of the pipe to be soldered was not cleaned correctly. Of course, flux must be used for any solder to adhere to copper.
