light SAFETY FIRST! Working with electricity scares a lot of people. When installing a light, you need to follow these electrical safety tips.
  • Always make sure the power is SHUT OFF by turning off the breaker in the circuit breaker box or by removing a fuse in a fusebox. Note: fuseboxes are not as common as circuit breaker boxes.
  • Test the circuit or light in question and make sure it does not turn on and light up.

Home Improvement Instructions for Replace Light

  1. First off, I am assuming that you really do have an existing light like this in a ceiling and it needs to be replaced with another of like kind because it is broken or worn out or youjust want to replace light.

  2. If this is the case, then begin by removing the light bulb. Just unscrew the bulb, after it has cooled down.

  3. Next locate the two screws holding the light into the ceiling box. One is located either side of of the bulb socket. Unscrew both and lay to the side.

  4. Now your light should be free and will pull away from the box about 4" or so.

  5. There should be one black wire and one white wire connected to either side of the light.

  7. Check to make sure electricity is off.

  8. Loosen the screw holding each wire. Unhook each wire. Try leaving the loop at the end of the wire as is. This will make hooking up the new light easier.

  9. It's time to actually replace light.

  10. Examine the new light. Does it look the same as the old one? You will want to install it the same way as you just did. Just reverse the steps.

  11. Attach the black wire to one screw (the darker colored one is best).

  12. Attach the white wire to the remaining screw.

  13. Make sure each wire is firmly held in place.

  14. Gently push the light back into the ceiling being careful not to break a wire by bending it too sharply.

  15. Insert the 2 screws back into the box to anchor the light.

  16. Tighten both screws until the light is held firmly against the ceiling box.

  17. Do not over tighten.

  18. Screw in the Bulb.

  19. You have just replaced the simplest light.

Obviously, there are many more types of lights that may need to be replaced.

light

Let's examine another type of light. This style is very common and almost any light similar to this one installs the same way!

The images below show you some of the parts you'll see in the box when you purchase this style of light.

light mounting bracket

This bracket will use screws to attach the light.

This bracket will use a "Nipple" to attach light.

Either way, both of the above brackets need to be mounted to the box in the ceiling using two screws.
If the first bracket pictured is being used, then you will use two small bolts which come with the light, which get screwed into the bracket BUT they need to be pointing downward to which the light base slides over these and then two nuts are attached to the ends of these bolts.

If the second bracket is used, then simply attach it to the box in the ceiling and thread a nipple into the hole in the middle.
