Instructions

  1. Missing vents is a potentially expensive situation. Missing vents means no or inadequate ventilation in your attic and that can spell moisture, mildew and mold problems. It's easy to add vents when you follow these instructions.

  2. Set up a quality ladder to gain access to your roof.

  3. Measure out across the length of the roof and place a vent every 8 feet or so.

  4. Hot air trying to escape from your attic is attempting to do so at or near the top of the attic. For this reason, vents need to be cut in your roof about 24" down from the ridge.

  5. Each typical vent needs a hole cut in the roof approximately 8" x 8" square. Using measuring tape and square mark out the square on top of the shingles.

  6. Using an electric saw, cut out the square holes for each vent.

  7. Remove all loose shingles, wood and felt paper from inside the hole cut out. This hole must be completely open for air to flow properly.

  8. Carefully loosen the shingles above the hole so that you can slide the top flange of the new roof vent over and then above the hole. Slide each vent into place making sure shingles are laying over the top flange of the vent.

  9. Place a small amount of roof sealant under the side and bottom flanges. Be careful to not get any sealant on shingles.

  10. Nail one nail into each bottom corner of the vent flange. Be sure the vent is laying square to the shingles.

  11. Using a putty knife, spread a little roof sealant over the tops of each nail and then apply enough roof sealant to glue down those shingles laying over the top flange.

  12. Follow this procedure for each vent.
