Changing Single to Double Outlet

Changing a Single to Double Outlet is an easy electrical home improvement project when you follow these step by step instructions.

installed outlet SAFETY FIRST! Working with electricity scares a lot of people. When installing an outlet, you need to follow these electrical safety tips.
  • Always make sure the power is SHUT OFF by turning off the breaker in the circuit breaker box or by removing a fuse in a fusebox. Note: fuseboxes are not as common as circuit breaker boxes.
  • Test outlet. Plug a working radio or lamp into the outlet (make sure they are turned on). When the radio or lamp turns off, you will know the power is off.

Home Improvement Instructions for Replacing Single to Double Outlet

  1. Make sure power is off and remove single outlet plate by removing one screw.

  2. electrical box
  3. Remove outlet by removing two more screws. Hopefully you have a double box already installed in your wall. You probably do if your home is wired with conduit.

  4. Remove the single outlet mudring
  5. mudring
  6. Install a double mudring.

  7. Be sure to anchor the mudring with the holes on it in the right direction. Some outlets are installed vertically and some are horizontal.

  8. Add a small piece of romex type wire, usually 10 gauge, to each of the unused screws on each side of the outlet.

  9. Attach the other end of these wires to the new outlet, black on right, white on left and re-install both outlets into the double mudring.

  10. Replace the old plate with a new double outlet plate.

  11. Turn the power back on and test both outlets.
  12. Now you have changed a single to double outlet.
