Spring Maintenance

Use this DIY spring maintenance checklist to help you stay organized and save you money.

These spring home maintenance issues are simple to do, you only need to be reminded of what it is that needs to be done.




IMPORTANT!
Performing maintenance on miscellaneous things around your home can be hazardous. Be sure power is shut off on items that you are going to work on.

Spring Maintenance Checklist

Interior
  • Attic Fan
  • Remove leaves and clean debris from louvers and louver pivots
  • Clean fan blades
  • Lubricate motor and pulley bearings with oil on each pivot and oil port
  • Check drive belt and replace if glazed smooth and slippery
  • While you are up in the attic, check for any roof leaks
  • Smoke Alarms
  • Clean smoke alarms by pulling down the cover
  • Remove the power cell (if battery operated) and replace
  • Vacuum any accumulated dust from the sensing-chamber openings
  • Wash cover with soap and water, replace
  • Also examine and clean any Carbon Monoxide Sensors, replace batteries
  • Appliances
  • Pull the refrigerator out and remove all the dust on the coils and behind the unit
  • Remove cover on furnace and clean all coils and other areas accessible
  • Replace filter in heating and A/C systems
  • Rooms
  • Check ground fault interrupters
  • Imspect walls for cracks
  • Exterior
  • Gutters
  • Remove debris from gutters and downspouts
  • Replace or repair any sections that have holes or excessive rust
  • Make sure downspouts drain away from foundation
  • Spot paint worn areas
  • Windows and Doors
  • Make sure weep holes at bottom of windows are clear
  • Clean sliding window sashes and tracks for easier operation
  • Clean patio doors and screens
  • Check all windows for broken glass or bad screens
  • Check basement window wells for drainage
  • Check caulking around windows and doors
  • Decks and Porches
  • Check all decks, porches, patios, stairs and railings for loose members and deterioration
  • Power wash decks, patios, stairs and sidewalks
  • Check wood decks and fences and re-treat if needed
  • Bricks and Blocks
  • Check for cracked mortar or loose joints
  • Siding
  • Cleaning siding with pressure washer to keep mold from forming
  • Check wood surfaces for weathering and paint failure.
  • Roof
  • Inspect roof for damage or loose shingles or blisters
  • Examine flashing around chimneys, vent stacks and roof edges
  • Clean vents and louvers for free air movement
  • Driveway and Walks
  • Check driveways for cracks and breaks. How to Sealcoat A Driveway
  • Fences gates and Retaining Walls
  • Check fences, gates and retaining walls for repair as needed
